In 1982, two of the biggest names in American pop culture joined forces: McDonald’s and Atari. At the absolute height of the original video-game explosion, McDonald’s launched its “Play Atari Scratch ’n Win” promotion, giving customers the chance to win Atari home video games, computer systems and McDonald’s food prizes. Millions of these game cards were played, scratched, redeemed and discarded—making surviving promotional material from this collaboration incredibly desirable today.

This remarkable collection includes the COMPLETE SET of all four different game cards: ASTEROIDS, CENTIPEDE, MISSILE COMMAND and STAR RAIDERS. The silver play areas have been scratched, but most importantly, the detachable Section 2 prize-picture tabs remain attached and untorn on every card. Finding even one surviving card is becoming difficult. Finding all four together with their original tabs still intact is an entirely different level of rarity.

What takes this collection over the top is the ORIGINAL SEPTEMBER 1982 McDONALD’S PLACEMAT advertising the promotion! It boldly announces “PLAY ATARI SCRATCH ’N WIN—EVERY CARD CAN WIN,” mentions the thousands of Atari home video and computer prizes, and states that a different card was offered every two weeks. It even carries the original McDonald’s restaurant address at 310 Penn Avenue in Sinking Spring, Pennsylvania, along with local September 1982 advertising. This is the actual in-restaurant piece customers would have seen while the contest was taking place—not a later reproduction.

Together, the placemat and four game cards recreate an extraordinary moment from the golden age of Atari. The colorful game artwork, classic Golden Arches logos and unmistakable early-1980s graphics make this an outstanding display for any serious Atari, McDonald’s, video-game advertising or pop-culture collection.
