In 1982, two giants of American pop culture came together for one unforgettable promotion: McDonald’s and Atari. This was the height of the original home-video-game craze, when Atari dominated living rooms and McDonald’s restaurants were filled with kids hoping to win games, computer systems and food prizes. Most of these disposable contest pieces were scratched, redeemed and thrown away more than four decades ago. Anything surviving from this collaboration is highly collectible—but finding the complete group with its original full-color promotional placemat is extraordinary.
Included are all four different “Play Atari Scratch ’n Win” game cards: ASTEROIDS, CENTIPEDE, MISSILE COMMAND and STAR RAIDERS. The silver play areas have been scratched, but the important detachable Section 2 prize-picture portions remain attached and untorn. Each card features its own colorful Atari-inspired artwork, classic McDonald’s Golden Arches and illustrations of the incredible Atari home-computer and video-game prizes offered during the promotion.
The centerpiece is the ORIGINAL 1982 FULL-COLOR McDONALD’S ATARI PLACEMAT. This is not a reproduction. The bottom border carries the original “©1982 McDonald’s Corporation—Printed in U.S.A.” marking and identifies Asteroids, Centipede, Star Raiders and Missile Command as Atari trademarks. The spectacular space-themed artwork surrounds an illustrated Asteroids card and explains both sections of the contest. It boldly announces: “PLAY ATARI SCRATCH ’N WIN—EVERY CARD CAN WIN!” and advertises thousands of Atari home-video prizes plus McDonald’s food.
This placemat does something the individual cards cannot do—it brings the entire promotion together in one incredible display. It shows customers exactly how to play, names the complete four-game lineup and captures the excitement surrounding Atari in 1982. With its exploding pixel graphics, planets, spacecraft and unmistakable early-1980s colors, it may be one of the most visually impressive surviving pieces from the entire promotion.
The cards and placemat are more than 40 years old and show expected age, handling, folds and minor marks. Please examine every photograph carefully, as the pictures show the exact items and are an important part of the description.
Individual scratched cards occasionally appear, but assembling all four—with their Section 2 prize portions still attached—and pairing them with this original full-color promotional placemat creates a display that would be nearly impossible to duplicate.
