Brief Biography and Origins:** Born as Thao Lun in 1853 at Ban Nong Hai Tha, Phonthong District, Champasak Province, Laos, he was the son of Xieng La and Nang Kham Bun. **Omen Before Birth:** Legend has it that before his conception, his mother dreamt of a star falling from the heavens into the center of their home, transforming into a bookcase. **Ordination and Education:** He was ordained as a novice monk at the age of twelve and studied the Dhamma-Vinaya and other disciplines within the temple library (*Ho Trai*). Upon his full ordination as a monk, he undertook *Thudong* (ascetic pilgrimages) for solitude and spiritual practice, while also mastering ancient scriptures and magical arts. He earned the title \"Samret Lun\"—\"Samret\" being a high ecclesiastical title in historical Lao Buddhism signifying the completion of advanced studies and the possession of great virtue. **Tales and Miracles:** Somdet Lun is celebrated for numerous accounts of supernatural feats and miracles among the people living along both banks of the Mekong River. Examples include: Mastery of supernatural movement and invisibility—legends tell of his ability to walk on water, traverse vast distances instantly, and vanish at will. Demonstrations of power with Thai masters—there are accounts of his encounters and exchanges of esoteric knowledge with renowned Thai masters, such as Luang Pu Suk of Wat Pak Khlong Makham Thao, including a feat where tamarind leaves were transformed into wasps and hornets. Reverence from French soldiers—during the era of French colonial rule in Laos, records and stories indicate that French officials tested his magical powers and became devoted followers; they even commissioned the creation of sacred amulets (medallions) for him to consecrate and inscribe with sacred characters.
