Bauer was a German painter, etcher, lithographer, and illustrator born in Stuttgart. He studied at the Kunstakademie in Munich under Professor Wilhelm von Lindenschmit, and finished his training in Paris at the Académie Julian in 1893. He was known especially as a master of figure studies and portraits, etching and painting many of Germany\'s most famous political, scientific, and artistic figures — including Menzel, Böcklin, Bismarck, Nietzsche, and Frederick the Great.His graphic work consisted mainly of lithographs, pen-and-ink drawings, and etchings. During the 1920s, many of his etchings and engravings were published by Wohlgemuth and Lissner in Berlin.In his later life he made a number of portraits of Nazi leaders. His poetry was admired and promoted by Stefan George.
