A scarce wartime production from the celebrated Golden Cockerel Press, this copy of The Tenbury Letters is No. 280 of only 300 copies printed, signed on the limitation page by Owen Rutter, Edmund H. Fellowes, and Edward Pine.
Printed by Christopher Sandford and Owen Rutter at the Golden Cockerel Press and completed on 22 December 1942, the edition was produced on Arnold\'s mould-made paper using 13-point Perpetua Roman with Felicity Italic, and remains one of the lesser-seen publications of the press during the Second World War.
The volume presents 142 autograph letters and historical documents discovered in the library of St. Michael\'s College, Tenbury, many appearing in print for the first time. The collection includes correspondence associated with Napoleon Bonaparte, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington, Horace Walpole, David Hume, Sir Gore Ouseley, and numerous other prominent literary, political, diplomatic, and military figures of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
Illustrated with seven collotype facsimiles reproduced directly from the original manuscripts, the book combines fine private-press craftsmanship with significant historical source material.
Bound in the publisher\'s original red buckram, stamped in gilt with the Golden Cockerel device on the upper cover, gilt lettering on the spine, top edge gilt, and uncut edges.
