The Cricket on the Hearth, Charles Dickens
Limited Editions Club edition of Charles Dickens’s The Cricket on the Hearth, number 1,200 of 1,500 copies, designed by Robert Gibbings and printed at the Golden Cockerel Press. Hugh Thomson’s seven posthumous watercolor illustrations, reproduced with colors applied by hand, lend warmth to Dickens’s tale of domestic happiness and reconciliation. With an introduction by Walter de la Mare, hand-set Golden Cockerel type designed by Eric Gill, and handmade paper, this is a particularly handsome private-press production. Waltham Saint Lawrence, England: The Golden Cockerel Press, printed for the members of the Limited Editions Club, 1933. Publisher’s yellow buckram, spine lettered and front board stamped with the press device in green, top edge colored, other edges untrimmed. A nice copy with a firm binding and minimal wear, a minor scuff to the rear board, and a couple of tiny spots to the spine. Internally clean and fine. Original slipcase present but worn, with splitting along the seams.
