This piece features hand-lettered provenance inked directly onto the iron body:
\"TICONDEROGA\" on the exterior curved wall.
\"ABERCROMBIE\" on the interior hollow wall, referencing British Major General James Abercrombie, who led the British forces in their assault on the fort. This piece was acquired from the estate of a deceased military collector along with many other war artifacts.
Historical Background:
During the bloodiest day of the French and Indian War, General Abercrombie launched a series of infantry assaults against defending French forces under Montcalm. Defending French artillery rained explosive mortar shells down on advancing British columns, creating fragments of this exact type.
