Thegenius of the artist is evidenced by an enormous body of work that isconsidered among the most influential and unique of the 20thcentury.Erté—Romain de Tirtoff—was born in Russia in 1892, and died at age 97in 1990.
Father of Art Deco: Romaine de Tirtoff was born RomanPetrovich Tyrtov in St. Petersburg, Russian Empire, to a distinguished familywith roots tracing back to 1548. Erte, Romain moved to Paris, France,to pursue a career as a designer. In1915 he got his first substantial contract with Harper\'s Bazaar magazine, andwent on to an illustrious career that included designing costumes and stagesets. Erte is perhaps most famous for his elegant fashion designs which capturethe art deco period in which he worked.
