Offered here is an original ancient Roman silver denarius of Caracalla, Roman emperor AD 198–217.
This particularly interesting military type was struck at the Rome Mint in AD 208 and depicts Caracalla on horseback.

Laureate head of Caracalla facing right.
Reverse:
PONTIF TR P XI COS III
Caracalla in military attire riding horseback right, holding a spear, with a defeated/fallen enemy before or beneath the horse.
Exergue: PROF
Reference: RIC IV 107; BMCRE 572; RSC 510/511.
The abbreviation PROF refers to profectio, the ceremonial departure of the emperor for military campaign.

Condition:
Ancient circulated condition with considerable surface roughness, porosity, dark toning/patination and areas of lighter exposed metal. The coin appears likely to have been cleaned at some point in the past. Despite the surface condition, the portrait of Caracalla, much of the legends, horseback reverse and PROF exergual inscription remain identifiable. Please examine the photographs carefully for exact condition.
