This is a wonderful old commercial crate with loads of genuine character — warm aged wood, darkened nail heads, old handling marks, handwritten markings and even a pair of old fingerprints still visible on the wood. Nothing artificially distressed here; the patina was earned through actual use.
Heavy, solid nailed-board construction with reinforced side battens and a slatted bottom. The crate measures approximately 17\" long x 13 5/8\" wide x 13 1/2\" tall and weighs approximately 10 lbs 12 oz.
Overall in good antique condition. A few of the longer boards have warped/separated with age and show old attempts at re-nailing, but the crate remains solid and displays beautifully. Expect normal scratches, stains, discoloration, oxidation to the nails and other signs of its working life. Please see all photos closely for condition and construction.
The “FROM MIDWEST GROCERY CO. / KANSAS CITY MO.” stencil is especially attractive and makes this a great piece of early American commercial history as well as a decorative primitive.
