Abel Pann (1883-1963) - Jerusalem Old City view; triptych; hand colored lithograph ; printed by the artist at his Jewish Art Publishing Co.;1918. Sheet is in very condition for age, bottom margin has been cropped close to plate, some scuffing to paper LL, and slight loss to sheet LR, crease bottom mid sheet. some toning and fading. Signed in plate LR, publ. mark LL. 26x13\". There is a later edition of this image, printed by Atelier Abel Pann, c 1970-80 in an edition of 1000. This sheet is an original 1918 production - a rare early original lithograph by Abel Pann.
The central panel shows thecity walls in the foreground, with the Dome of the Rock (and surrounding buildings) prominent on the Temple Mount. Cypress trees, a large leafy tree, paths, figures (including people in local dress walking or with a cart/donkey), rocks, and distant hills under a cloudy sky. The leftpanel (arched) depicts the Tower of David (Citadel), labeled in Hebrew “מגדל דוד,” with a figure in a hat and other elements.The right side panel (arched) shows the Damascus Gate (labeled in Hebrew “שער שכם”), with figures including someone on a donkey near the arched entrance.Soft, muted colors (greens, browns, ochres, blues) applied by hand over the lithographic base, giving it a watercolor-like quality typical of early 20th-century Bezalel-school influenced prints.
Pann, born in Latvia, moved to Paris in 1903 to study with William-Adolphe Bouguereau at the French Academy, living in a building also occupied by Chagall and Modigliani. In 1913, at the invitation of Boris Schatz, he traveled to Jerusalem to teach at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design. He spent WWI back in Europe, creating paintings depicting Jewish suffering in the ghettos and posters supporting the French war effort. Back in Jerusalem after the war, and with a lithographic press he purchased in Europe (likely the first in Palestine), he devoted himself to lithography.
