Offered is an exceptional handcrafted South Indian repoussé silver ornament pendant attributed to Tamil Nadu, India, and dating to approximately circa 1850 based upon stylistic analysis, traditional repoussé construction, and period workmanship.

The ornament is believed to depict a Surasundari (Celestial Maiden)—an idealized heavenly female figure celebrated throughout South Indian Hindu temple art as a symbol of beauty, grace, prosperity, and divine femininity.

Executed entirely by hand, the repoussé decoration portrays the celestial figure in graceful movement amid finely chased lotus-palmette ornamentation incorporating a probable stylized peacock, all enclosed within a meticulously hand-punched lotus-petal border. The figure exhibits the classical feminine proportions associated with South Indian temple sculpture, including an elegantly defined waist, rounded torso, elaborate jewelry, and traditional chignon coiffure.

Unlike representations of martial Hindu deities, the composition emphasizes celestial beauty and auspicious symbolism rather than warfare or divine conquest.
