Original April 1945 issue of Hoofs and Horns, Vol. XIV, No. 10, published in Tucson, Arizona.This scarce WWII-era rodeo publication features professional trick riders Chet and Juanita Howell on the front cover, photographed by Ralph Fortney.Chet and Juanita Howell were nationally traveled rodeo trick riders and ropers whose careers stretched from the 1930s into the 1950s. Their rodeo papers, programs and related material are preserved in the Archives Center of the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, making this an especially interesting issue for collectors of early professional rodeo history. The Smithsonian records that Chet Howell also worked in motion pictures and doubled for Gene Autry in Oh, Susanna!, while Juanita Howell was an accomplished trick rider and former championship steer rider.
