The glossary grew from work begun by the Royal Aeronautical Society in 1909 and expanded during and after World War I as aircraft technology developed rapidly. The preface notes that the first edition was published by the Royal Aeronautical Society in 1919, with the revision subsequently undertaken by the British Engineering Standards Association.
