Wonderful original 1899 handwritten diary belonging to Agnes Schultz of Phoenix, Arizona, measuring approximately 3.5 x 5 inches. This is a particularly interesting Western American diary documenting Agnes\'s everyday life, social activities, reading, travel, expenses, friends and family at the close of the 19th century.
The diary contains numerous dated entries, with particularly substantial writing during the summer months. Agnes records train travel and extended journeys through Arizona and California, mentioning places including Phoenix, Los Angeles, Pasadena, San Bernardino, Riverside, Redlands and Santa Monica, along with hotels, meals, sightseeing, visits, shopping and encounters with friends and relatives.
Entries provide a vivid glimpse into a young woman\'s daily life in 1899, including train trips, church attendance, social calls, reading, naps, meals, laundry, shopping, correspondence, photographs, excursions and entertainment. One entry records being at Santa Monica and going into the surf, while other entries document sightseeing and travel around Southern California.

Original dark leather binding. The exterior shows considerable age and use, including rubbing, edge and corner wear and significant wear/separation along the spine area as shown. Interior pages show toning, scattered marks and normal handling wear. Writing varies from dark and easily readable to quite light or faded. Numerous unused or partially used dated pages are present. Please examine photographs closely for content and condition.
