1838 France Silver Jeton – Société Civile de l’Omnium, Lyon
A large and visually striking French silver jeton dated 17 Avril 1838, issued for the Société Civile de l’Omnium in Lyon during the July Monarchy. This is a substantial and highly collectible 19th-century piece with strong artistic and symbolic design.
The obverse features a neoclassical allegorical figure attempting to break a bundle of rods (fasces), accompanied by the legend “LE FAISCEAU RESISTA”—translated as “The bundle resisted.” This represents strength through unity.
The reverse displays the arms of Lyon—a lion holding a sword within a crowned shield—surrounded by oak and olive branches. The piece is clearly dated 17 AVRIL 1838.
Signed “BARRE F.” with “T.D. INV.”, indicating the engraver and original designer.
This example displays attractive natural toning, with areas of gold, blue, and amber hues that become more pronounced under certain lighting conditions.
