ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Drawn and engraved by Archibald Robertson.Archibald Robertson (1765-1835) was a Scottish born painter who opened an art school and studio in Aberdeen, Scotland following his training in London. Known for his miniature portrait paintings, he was asked to paint George and Martha Washington soon after coming to the United States from Scotland. He also made watercolor landscape paintings and engravings. A Topographical Survey of the Great Road from London to Bath and Bristol was his first publication.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:Stonehengeis aprehistoricmonumentinWiltshire, England, two miles (3km) west ofAmesbury. It consists of a ring ofstanding stones, with each standing stone around 13 feet (4.0m) high, seven feet (2.1m) wide and weighing around 25 tons. The stones are set withinearthworksin the middle of the most dense complex ofNeolithicandBronze Agemonuments in England, including several hundredburial mounds. Archaeologistsbelieve it was constructed from 3000 BC to 2000 BC. The surrounding circular earth bank and ditch, which constitute the earliest phase of the monument, have been dated to about 3100 BC.Radiocarbon datingsuggests that the firstbluestoneswere raised between 2400 and 2200 BC,although they may have been at the site as early as 3000 BC. One of the most famous landmarks in the United Kingdom, Stonehenge is regarded as aBritish cultural icon.
