De Rebus sui Temporis Commentariorum Libri Quatuor

An attractive and complete posthumous first edition of Samuel Parker’s De Rebus sui Temporis Commentariorum Libri Quatuor, published in London in 1726 from the author’s own corrected manuscript nearly four decades after his death. Retaining its original full calf leather binding, raised bands, contemporary speckled page edges, and an engraved armorial bookplate of Thomas Wallis, M.D., this is a handsome example of an increasingly scarce eighteenth-century English historical work.
The title page notes:
“E Codice M.S. ipsius Authoris manu castigato, nunc primùm in lucem editi.”
(“From the manuscript corrected in the author’s own hand, now published for the first time.”)
Samuel Parker (1640–1688), Bishop of Oxford, was one of the leading Anglican theologians and controversialists of Restoration England. This work examines many of the political and religious events of the seventeenth century and was first published in this 1726 edition.
