Peter Henry Bruce (1692-1757) was a \"military adventurer\" who served in the armies of Prussia, Russia and Britain. His longest tour of duty, more than twelve years, was with the forces of Czar Peter the Great of Russia, during which he saw action in Russia, Turkey, Persia and most of Europe. \"He was sent with despatches to Constantinople in 1711, and his \'Memoirs\' give an interesting account of that city as he saw it. His \'Memoirs\' also contain many interesting anecdotes of Peter the Great and his court during the years 1711--24, for the greater part of which period Bruce appears to have lived at St. Petersburgwhen not following the czar on his expeditions\" (DNB). In 1740, he was sent by the British Government to inspect fortifications in the West Indies, stopping in Carolina on the way to and from. His account includes descriptions of the Bahamas, Bimini, South Carolina and Charleston, and \"contains adventures among the Creek and Cherokee Indians, in Georgia, etc.\" (Sabin).From the library at Ombersley Court, Worcestershire, the country seat of the Sandys family for nearly four hundred years.
