8vo. [2], 26pp. Later blind-ruled brown half-morocco, lettered in gilt to spine, brown cloth boards. Lightly rubbed, with slight wear to joints. Armorial bookplate of Jabez Thompson, Abbotsford to FEP. Leaves heavily browned, with chipping to edges, heavy spotting.

The first edition of a translation of the Muscipula sive Cambro-muo-machia (1709), a popular satirical poem on the Welsh, by Classical scholar Edward Holdsworth (1684-1746), at one point attributed to 'Charles Cholmondley' by a Pickering and Chatto catalogue. First published anonymously and without his consent, Holdsworth's satire provoked outrage in Thomas Richards, of Jesus College, Oxford, whose reciprocal satire attacked Holdsworth's home county of Hampshire.From the library of Jabez S.
