With their high build quality and impressive performance, Pioneer is recognized as one of the premium makers of high-end equipment for the audiophile since the late '30's!Released in 1976, this rare HG version SX-450 with 120 volt conversionis a true One-of-a-Kind Pioneer fit for the most discerning audiophile collector!!This unit is an original HG (European/West Germany) variant, complete with its original manual and factory packaging, which has been meticulously upgraded for the North American market with awith custom 120 volt conversion!To make it a flawless daily driver for US power, the restrictive 220V/240V-only transformer was replaced with an authentic 120V transformer culled from a US version SX-450.It also has the rare black Tolex lid usually found only on the PX version and, to meet the stricter European safety standards, it has a separate, 3-prong grounded AC power cord grounded directly to the chassis to eliminate hum and floating voltage.The SX-450 offers very sensitive FM reception a wide linear type dial scale for fine FM tuning, and highly respectable specifications both for the FM tuner section and the audio section. It's versatile unit, too because you can use it with almost all music sources available today, including records, tape, FM and microphone. Best of all it's Pioneer made, which means that, for its price, there is probably nothing available today that can compare with its quality.This classic receiver has two speaker zones and both Headphone & Mic jacks on the front panel. The tuning dial is complemented with a Stereo indicator lamp and Tuning meter. In addition to the Speaker & Function, Volume, Balance and click-stop Bass & Treble controls, there are buttons for Stereo/Mono, FM Muting, Tape Monitor and a Loudness button that contours the sound dynamics perfectly for low level listening.The manual gives this a "Continuous Power" rating of 30 Watts, or 15 W/Ch into 8 or 4Ω through full spectrum with both channels driven. It does have a rather pedestrian Total harmonic distortion (THD) of 0.5%, but bring down the power and you have a much more impressive 0.1%, far below what the human ear can detect. Remember, these are what audiophiles call "Vintage Watts," from an era where, unlike today, it was a sin to manipulate or elaborate the power ratings!The rear panel offers two speaker zones, an Aux Input, a Tape Loop with the PLAY/REC DIN jack found in the higher-end offerings of the era, and a stereo Phono Input with a grounding post for your turntables! It also has multiple Antenna terminals, attached AM Antenna and a multi-tap voltage disc (disabled). It is converted to 120 V and has a standard power cord for US use.The SX-450 weighs in at just under 19 lbs and measures 17.5" x 12" x 5.5" tall!

Condition:This beautiful receiver is in"Excellent" condition with minimal signs of use and a nice, bright dial! So what puts the "y" in Minty? We are very picky about condition and any unit must meet several requirements before we will call it Mint, let alone New. After a close inspection, we found sharp corners to the cabinet, knobs & feet, if it weren't for a few tiny scuffs &scratches we would have had no problem calling this beauty fully "Mint!"All original knobs are present & complete, as are the feet and attached AM Antenna. The original manual is also in excellent condition and we are including the original set of RCA cables seen in the pics. Unlike the US version that has an attached AC cord, this European version uses a seperate AC cord, so we are including a new power cord for US use. A bonus NEW FM Dipole Antenna is also included. All comes in the pictured factory box with original Styrofoam packing, that does show some shelf wear as seen in the pics. Please do inspect all the pictures thoroughly for actual condition.Service:On inspection, this unit was set up for European use and our tech determined a voltage conversion was in order.First, a 120 volt power transformer was cuilled from another SX-450 we had in our parts stash and installed. This does override the multi-tap disc on the back panel, and of course make the "220V" labelling inaccurate. We have included a "nudie" pic so you can see the completed conversion.Once converted, it was powered up and it did have the common scratchy or inconsistant controls and a dim dial, so it went through the usual servicing.Pioneer used certain transistors throughout this model that have known issues after 40 years. So, even though they were still working, our tech insists on replacing these transistors as they will assuredly fail some time in the near future.Our tech usually does a capacitor upgrade and power switch refurb on this model, but this European version not only didn't use any of the notorious blue Sanyo caps, but it also has a different power switch that does not need the usual refurb. So, atotal of 12 transistors were upgraded to brand new, high quality parts from Onsemi, no used or NOS components!Just a few lamps were out, but as the rest were most likely going to fail soon all the dial lamps were replaced with long-life LED's!But first out tech did a socket upgrade so we had a bigger selection of lamps to choose from!The original incandescents with light blue filters were upgraded to the highly popular CoolBlue LED's.But, if you prefer either Royal Blue, Green or Warm White LED's that replicate the original incandescents, just let us know BEFORE buying or sending an offer and we will switch it out for you free of charge! Even though still working, both the indicators were also upgraded so you won't have to worry about them either.It's this kind of thoughtful, preventative servicing that makes it smart to buy from a company with an experienced, in-house technician!All vintage receivers receive the following services and much more, all performed by our qualified technician:

• Lid is removed & unit is inspected to determine if any attempted amateur repairs exist that need to be corrected, or substandard parts that need replacement
• The exterior, all knobs & plexis are cleaned & detailed
• While the front panel is removed for cleaning, all attachments are re-glued and dried out foam inserts replaced.
• All switches & pots are cleaned internally with Specialist Contact Cleaner (proven superior to DeoxIT by our customers), while those with special needs receive the less aggressive DeoxIT F-5
• All lamps that are out, or believed to be prone to failure, are replaced if necessary. LEDs are used whenever compatible
• Any faulty components, or those with known issues, such as jacks, fuse-holders, feet, etc., are replaced
• All PC boards are inspected; all questionable solder joints are re-flowed
• All electrolytic caps are inspected for bulging or leakage, those that are at risk or have known issues are checked with the Huntron Tracker (allows evaluation while in-circuit so component does not need to be removed). All questionable caps are replaced with brand new parts, not NOS!
• DC offset is adjusted & channel levels are calibrated & balanced
• Tuner is cleaned and both AM & FM aligned
• Front panel is cleaned & detailed before reassembly
• Cabinet is cleaned & detailed, any wood is polished with Old English

Testing:After servicing, we set it up on our test bench and it did not disappoint, both channels drove our speakers with the warm, distortion-free signal these analog receivers are known for. All inputs and features were confirmed operational and the tuner spins smoothly. We are in a remote area so we did need to use the included antenna to pull in all our local FM stations with the included wire antenna, activating the tuning meter and lighting the Stereo lamp. Further testing was performed, if there is a specific feature you would like to know more about just let us know before buying. What a great find for the vintage audiophile!
