Overview:Up for sale is an incredible WPA-era Social Realist oil on canvas painting signed “V. A. Stevens.” This atmospheric work depicts a solitary laborer or street sweeper standing on a solitary street. The bowed figure, monumental composition, muted earth-tone palette and simplified architectural forms strongly reflect the American Social Realist and Regionalist movements, with additional influence from the Mexican muralists. A powerful and evocative portrayal of working-class life.
Signed at lower right. Undated, but I estimate the painting dates to the late 1940s, though it is possible it is from the 1950s or 1960s. Framed in a dark wood frame with linen lining. An absolute statement piece.
Condition:Painting shows wear consistent with age. Frame has moderate areas of chipping.
Measurements:Painting measures 30 inches wide x 24 inches high. Frame measures approximately 36.375 inches wide x 30.375 inches high.
