The photograph appears to date to the 1930s and is likely associated with the SS Pennsylvania operated by the Panama Pacific Line. The passenger liner entered service in 1929 and sailed the intercoastal route between New York and San Francisco via Havana and the Panama Canal before being withdrawn and renamed Argentina in 1938.
A wonderful little maritime and social-history image combining ocean-liner memorabilia with an intimate period portrait. The clearly visible ship name makes this particularly appealing for collectors of passenger steamships, Panama Pacific Line material, vintage travel photography, and unusual vernacular photographs.
