Commissioned on May 20, 1918, USS New Mexico (BB-40) was the lead ship of her class and the most technically advanced battleship in the U.S. Navy at the time — the first American battleship fitted with turbo-electric propulsion. Armed with twelve 14-inch/50 caliber guns in four triple turrets, she became flagship of the newly created U.S. Pacific Fleet in 1919 and went on to earn the nickname \"Queen of the Fleet\" for her consistently superior performance in gunnery and engineering exercises throughout the 1920s and 1930s.
The card captures one of those triple 14-inch turrets in mid-fire, gun barrels elevated and smoke billowing — the kind of action image that circulated among Navy men and their families during the interwar years. After a major modernization in 1931–1933, New Mexico went on to serve in nearly every major Pacific campaign of World War II, earning six Battle Stars before being decommissioned in 1946 and scrapped in 1947.
