A handsome late-19th-century illustrated edition of the poetry of Lord Byron, retaining its elaborate original publisher's decorative cloth binding.
The front board is particularly attractive, richly decorated in gilt and black with flowers, foliage, a butterfly, ornamental borders and a large gilt BYRON title panel. The decorated spine carries additional gilt ornament and lettering, and the text block has gilt page edges, giving the volume excellent display appeal despite the binding wear noted below.
The substantial volume contains Byron's poetry together with memoir and notes and is illustrated with full-page engraved plates. Examples shown include the dramatic “Storm and Shipwreck” scene and a view of Newstead Abbey, along with the tissue-guarded frontispiece. The text itself is attractively printed within decorative red borders.
Contents include such major Byron works and subjects as The Corsair, The Bride of Abydos, poems on Napoleon, and many others.
The interior is generally clean and well preserved for its age, with the illustrations presenting particularly well.
Condition:Antique condition with wear consistent with age. Attractive original decorative cloth binding with strong gilt and black ornamentation and gilt page edges. Interior pages are generally clean and illustrations remain well preserved. Front inner hinge is slightly cracked/open with binding material visible, although the front board remains attached.
