Beautiful small Japanese lacquer kōgō (香合)traditionally used as an incense container in the Japanese teaceremony.
This finely crafted circular box is attributed to Zōhiko(象彦)of Kyoto, Japan, one of Japan\'s historic and highlyrespected lacquerware houses. The underside bears a Zōhikoseal.
The box features a deep black lacquer ground with an elegantsingle gold feather rendered in the refineddecorative style associated with Japanese maki-e lacquerwork. Theunderstated black-and-gold design is particularly attractive anddemonstrates the sophisticated aesthetic of Kyoto lacquerware.
Although traditionally made as a kōgō for incense, its compactsize also makes it suitable for storing jewelry, keepsakes, sewingnotions, or other small personal diameter: 65 mm (2.56 inches)

The black lacquer has worn away in areas along portions of therim, exposing the underlying surface. This is wear to the black lacquer.

The box appears structurally intact and the lid fits properly.
