The scene relates to the 1567 attack on Inabayama Castle.According to the accompanying work information, Kinoshita Tokichiro, later known as Toyotomi Hideyoshi, led a small group up the mountain in an attempt to enter the castle from the rear.The figure shown carrying the large gourd is Matajuro, the younger brother of Hachisuka Koroku. The gourd was intended to be raised as a signal after successfully entering the castle grounds.■ Size

This work belongs to Yoshitoshi’s celebrated “One Hundred Aspects of the Moon” series.The composition is dominated by a steep mass of dark rock, with the figure climbing above it and a large reddish moon appearing in the lower-left area.Tall grasses cross the moon and foreground, while the pale blue sky creates a strong contrast with the dark rock formation.The series title and individual title are visible in the upper-right area of the image. Yoshitoshi’s signature and seal are visible in the lower-right area.■ Condition
