Willie White was born in 1910 in Natchez, Louisiana, but traveled to New Orleans in 1929 .Shortly after he began waiting tables, a profession he held for almost 20 years.He became interested in painting and soon his subjects became fantastic prehistoric birds, alligators, dragons and flying horses. His creatures began appearing in intricate geometric patterns, and his compositions became filled with bright marker color, a medium which he began to work exclusively in after the late 1960’s.Willie White passed away on Dec. 26, 2000.Still, his good natured gentleness continues to live in the rich body of work that is represented in galleries from New York to Paris.He is one of the South\'s great folk artist of fantasy and innocence, and more importantly, a true New Orleans original.
