The image is an engraving titled "Youth and Pleasure," based on William Etty's painting "Youth on the Prow, and Pleasure at the Helm".
The painting, completed in 1832, was inspired by a metaphor in Thomas Gray's 1757 poem "The Bard," which compares the bright start of Richard II's reign to a gilded ship unmindful of an approaching storm.
Etty's work depicts allegorical figures on a boat, with Youth at the prow and figures representing Pleasure at the helm, surrounded by nude and near-nude figures.
Etty intended the painting as a moral allegory about the pursuit of empty pleasures, describing it as an "allegory of human life"
