Ward Brothers Matched Pair Miniature Green-winged Teal

Signed & Dated • 3/4 Size Decorative Decoys • c. 1960s

A beautifully matched pair of 3/4-size Green-winged Teal by the legendary Ward Brothers of Crisfield, Maryland. Signed and dated during the 1960s, these finely carved decorative birds display the elegant proportions, crisp feather carving, and exceptional paintwork that made Lem and Steve Ward among the most celebrated American decoy makers.

Though smaller in scale than working decoys, these miniatures capture everything collectors admire about the Ward style—from the graceful head positions to the beautifully executed feather detail and rich, subtle coloration.

An outstanding display pair from one of the most influential names in American decoy history.

Please see our companion listing for the matching Ward Brothers Bluebill pair, also from this same long-held collection.

Condition Report

Please examine all photographs carefully, as they are part of the description.

Overall, this matched pair presents beautifully with bright original paint and strong display appeal.

Noted condition includes:

* Original signed examples

* Near mint overall appearance

* Hen sustained shipping damage during insured transit to us, resulting in a chip to the upper tail (shown in close-up photographs)

* Minor paint rub beneath the drake’s bill

* No other significant issues noted

Despite the small shipping-related loss to the hen, the pair remains highly attractive and displays exceptionally well.

Collector’s Notes

The Ward Brothers elevated decorative decoy carving into American folk art. Their smaller decorative birds were never intended as inexpensive souvenirs—they were individually carved and painted with the same artistic eye that made their working decoys famous.

Matched miniature pairs from the 1960s remain increasingly sought after because they require twice the craftsmanship, survive less frequently together, and fit beautifully into display cabinets alongside full-size examples.
