This impressive long-format U.S. Army Air Service unit portrait is identified directly in the image to the 493rd Aero Squadron and includes the squadron’s wartime movement dates printed on the photograph itself:
Left America: Nov. 22, 1917
Arrived in France: Dec. 13, 1917
Left France: Dec. 13, 1918
Arrived in America: Jan. 21, 1919
This panorama is especially desirable because it is not an anonymous military group image. The photograph includes a numbered and named roster printed directly on the image, identifying the members of the squadron by number. The roster runs to 133 positions, with position no. 127 left blank in the original.
Named officers appearing in the image include Capt. S. Schieffelin, Capt. F. Hodges, Lt. A. A. Dibble, Lt. H. A. Sautter, Lt. C. K. Clinton, Lt. P. A. Ransome, Lt. H. M. Polhemus, and Lt. P. W. Havenstein.
An excellent and highly displayable World War I aviation panorama combining strong visual impact, exact squadron identification, period service dates, and an unusually complete printed roster. Pieces like this are sought after by collectors of WWI aviation, Air Service material, military panoramas, and identified unit photography.
