The USS Detroit (CL-8) was moved to Pearl Harbor in 1941 and was moored alongside her sister ship, the USS Raleigh, when the Japanese launched their attack on December 7, 1941. She remained in service in Alaskan waters through 1945 before moving into the Pacific theater, where she participated in the Battle of Okinawa and was present at the Japanese surrender.
Original vintage “Imperium Neptuni Regis” / Order of the Deep (Shellback) certificate dated May 20, 1936, issued to Lorence C. Flock upon crossing the Equator. This classic U.S. Navy tradition marks a sailor’s initiation from “Pollywog” to “Shellback,” presided over by King Neptune (Neptunus Rex).
Features beautiful, detailed maritime artwork including Neptune, mermaids, sea creatures, and ornate borders, along with official-style seals and signatures. The certificate lists coordinates near the Equator and includes period typography and design consistent with pre-WWII naval documents.
Housed in a vintage wood frame and displays very well. Shows age-appropriate wear including light toning, minor creasing, and some surface marks, all consistent with its age. Please review photos carefully as they are part of the description.
