Up for sale is a highly collectible piece of magic history: the Ultra Glass Through Hat mechanical gimmick, manufactured by the legendary Petrie & Lewis (P&L) of New Haven, Connecticut. To the casual observer, this looks exactly like a heavy, classic vintage solid brass candlestick. However, hidden inside the columnar stem is an ingenious mechanism designed to slowly and smoothly expand upward. In a performance, a glass of water resting on the candlestick is covered with a handkerchief, a borrowed hat is placed over it, and the hidden mechanism forces the glass to seamlessly "penetrate" the hat. Overall good condition for its age. The mechanism seems to be working well based on my non-magician inspection. Please see photos for better detail and message with any questions.
