Vintage Kenyan Kamba Maasai Woman Blackwood Live Edge Carving Sculpture 15”:
$179.99

Beautiful vintage hand-carved African female figure featuring a striking combination of dark polished wood and the natural lighter outer portion of the original tree trunk.

The sculpture depicts a stylized Maasai woman with an elongated neck, finely carved facial features, textured hair, geometric jewelry and garment details, and one hand positioned across her upper body. The contrast between the smooth, dark carved figure and the rough natural wood surrounding and backing creates a dramatic live-edge appearance.

A particularly interesting feature of this piece is its construction. The woman does not appear to be a separate figure attached to another piece of wood. The sculpture appears to have been carved directly from a single section of dense hardwood, with a substantial portion of the natural outer trunk left intact behind and around the figure. This creates a sculptural relief effect while preserving the original organic shape and texture of the wood.

Based on comparison with closely related examples, this piece is likely Kenyan and associated with the Kamba wood-carving tradition, depicting a Maasai woman. Similar Kenyan carvings are described as being made from blackwood, ebony-type hardwood, ironwood, or rosewood. The very substantial weight and dark polished heartwood of this example are consistent with a dense African hardwood; however, the exact wood species has not been scientifically verified and is therefore not guaranteed.

Comparable carvings are commonly identified as Kenyan Kamba-made Maasai figures and can be found in both blackwood and other dense East African hardwoods. Because this example is unsigned and no original documentation accompanies it, the cultural attribution, specific wood species, maker, and exact date should be considered informed identifications rather than definitive documentation.

Condition:

Pre-owned vintage condition with natural variations, irregularities, surface texture, color variation, and signs of age/use consistent with a handmade wooden sculpture. The lighter natural trunk portion retains its intentionally rustic, unfinished character, contrasting with the smoother dark carved areas.

Please examine all photos carefully, including close-ups, sides, back, bottom, natural wood surfaces, and measurement photos. The photographs are an important part of the condition description and show the actual item you will receive.

This is a substantial piece for its size, weighing nearly 4 pounds, and displays beautifully from the front as a decorative African folk-art sculpture, tribal-inspired figure, or collectible example of East African wood carving.
