Vintage French Painting, Interior Impressionist Still Life, Fauvist, R. Vuillem

Roger Vuillem (1897–1973), French, dated 1953. An unusually exuberant interior still life from an important period in the artist's career, painted shortly after his 1949 Gold Medal from the Société Lyonnaise des Beaux-Arts and his 1950 first prize at Montmartre. Although rooted in the French Post-Impressionist tradition, the heightened, liberated palette and broad, emphatic handling reveal the continuing influence of Fauvism. Vuillem himself resisted such classifications, famously declaring, “My school has no label. It is the Street,” describing an art founded upon direct observation and the pleasure of painting. Roger Vuillem (1897–1973) was a French painter—some references give Besançon as his birthplace, others Brest—who studied art in Lyon. His life before becoming established as a painter was unusually colorful: he volunteered at seventeen during WWI and became a military pilot; he was subsequently involved with gliders, automobile construction/racing, and the organization of art galleries. By the late 1940s he was associated particularly with Montmartre and plein-air/street painting. His documented credentials are quite respectable. He received the Gold Medal of the Société Lyonnaise des Beaux-Arts in 1949, won first prize in the Montmartre poster competition in 1950, and received a bronze medal at the Salon de Printemps at Clichy. He was associated with several established exhibiting societies, including the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, Salon d'Hiver, Art Libre, Artistes Français, Salon d'Automne de Lyon and Société Lyonnaise des Beaux-Arts. Most interestingly, a work was purchased by the French State in 1948. He exhibited not only in France and Switzerland but also in Rio de Janeiro and Montreal.Exceptionally appealing oil painting on composition board, signed Roger Vuillem, and done in 1952, vintage rather than antique for a few years yet. Still life with floral bouquet and blue ceramic Buddha on a colorful tabletop against perfect palette walls. This exuberant French interior still life belongs to the post-Impressionist tradition while revealing a strong Fauvist inheritance. Vuillem builds the composition less through precise drawing than through vigorous, heavily worked brushwork and remarkably liberated color—coral and vermilion flowers, cobalt and turquoise blues, acid greens and yellows spreading from the bouquet into the richly patterned textile below. The shallow, compressed interior and near dissolution of objects into color and pattern recall the French intimistes, particularly Bonnard and Vuillard, while the heightened palette and emphatic brushwork owe much to Fauvism. The result is wonderfully energetic: part floral still life, part interior, and almost an abstraction of color and paint when viewed closely.

Condition note: a small imperfection to upper right corner which would disappear under rabbit if framed. No other loss, some age to it, of course, but painted on composite board, no issues of canvas cuts or holes. Fabulous colors!
