Striking vintage Chinese carved greenstone censer or incense burner with its fitted carved hardwood display stand.
The censer is carved from a richly mottled darkgreen stone with black inclusions and contrasting pale mineral veining. Itsunusual tiered form features a broad pedestal foot, rounded central body,projecting circular tiers, and a pierced domed upper section with multipleopenings for incense smoke. A rounded finial completes the sculpturalpagoda-like silhouette.
Purchased many years ago at an estate sale andstored in a box labeled “Jade Censer.” The stone has not been professionallytested, so it is being offered as carved green hardstone and possibly jaderather than guaranteed nephrite jade.
Two carved C-shaped handle fittings and twomatching stone rings are present but detached. The breaks appear relativelyclean, and the pieces have been retained for the next owner. They have not beenglued or otherwise repaired. Please see photographs for condition andconstruction.
The carved black hardwood stand has anopenwork design and curved feet and displays the censer beautifully.
Censer measures approximately 6 1/2 incheshigh with a 3-inch diameter foot. Overall height on the stand is approximately9 1/4 inches. Weighs 2 lbs.
