I believe this is a 20th century decorative piece carved in the archaistic tradition. It’s a beautifully carved, vintage Chinese style lidded censer or decorative ritual vessel. Carved in the classic archaistic tradition, it features a stylized mythical beast (bixie) lying atop an intricate open work lid flanked by highly decorative handles.
