Authentic Vietnamese Hang Trong Folk Painting Cavalry Procession Hanoi Antique
There are objects that carry an entire culture inside them. This is one of them — and it comes from a tradition so rare that today only a single living craftsman is known to be capable of producing it.
This is an authentic Hang Trong folk painting, one of the three great Vietnamese folk painting traditions, originating on Hang Trong Street in the Old Quarter of Hanoi where it has been practiced since the 16th century. The tradition peaked in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and today is considered nearly extinct — authentic examples are found primarily in museums and fine art galleries. A painting of this quality and size in private hands is genuinely uncommon in the Western market.
Unlike the purely woodblock-printed Dong Ho paintings more familiar to Western collectors, Hang Trong paintings are only half printed — the woodblock provides the black outlines and framework, and the rest is completed entirely by hand by the artist. Every Hang Trong painting is therefore partly unique, a collaboration between the block and the brush that requires, as one Vietnamese art historian has noted, a dozen years to master.
The Subject
The painting depicts a mounted cavalry procession — six horsemen on black, brown, and white horses, carrying elaborately decorated ceremonial dragon and serpent banners that billow and writhe against a warm golden ground. The figures wear traditional Vietnamese court dress with distinctive yellow headdresses. The banners are painted with extraordinary detail — one deep red with white cloud and serpent motifs, one dark green with circular sun patterns, a third bearing a trident. The horses are caparisoned in decorated saddle cloths with dotted and wave patterns. The whole composition moves with a sense of procession, pageantry, and controlled momentum that is characteristic of the finest Vietnamese ceremonial painting.
Hang Trong paintings of this subject matter were traditionally used as ceremonial or temple paintings, hung in living rooms or holy places for worship and celebration. The subject reflects the strong influence of Chinese court painting traditions on Vietnamese folk art, filtered through centuries of distinctly Vietnamese aesthetic sensibility.
The Inscription
The painting carries an inscription in the upper left in Vietnamese chu nom script, accompanied by two red seal stamps — characteristic of the Hang Trong tradition. The inscription appears to include a date and artist dedication and is currently being researched for full translation. The listing will be updated when the translation is complete.
