The Philip Leffingwell Spalding Collection of Early American Silver
Spalding was an engineer, administrator, and collector, and former president of New England Telephone and Telegraph Company.
This illustrated book describes Spalding’s personal collection of fifty pieces of early American (17th & 18th century) silver by some 30 craftsmen, mostly from New England, donated to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston by Spalding’s widow, Katherine Ames Spalding, and family.
This copy was originally owned by Earle H. Barlow, a jeweler in Boston, with a notation in what appears to be Barlow’s writing that the book was presented to him by Katherine Ames Spalding, May 10, 1948. A copy of Mrs. Spalding’s obit was taped to the book’s half title page.
