This exceptional and vintage Tree of Life candleholder was hand-crafted by the legendary Mexican folk artist Alfonso Castillo Orta in 1990. While his family continues the tradition today under the workshop name \"Taller Alfonso Castillo Orta,\" this piece was made by the original master himself, years before his passing in 2009.
At 15 inches tall, this vibrant skeletal figure with parrots, flowers, and traditional dress embodies the spirit of Día de los Muertos and showcases the intricate, colorful detailing that made Castillo world-famous. The artist’s hallmark painting style is fully present — layered patterns, bold florals, and expressive form.
The skeletal figure may be inspired by the legendary artist Frida Kahlo, whose signature braided hair, jewelry, and vivid clothing style are echoed in this masterful sculpture, which also draws from the iconic \"La Catrina\" figure—a satirical skeleton lady symbolizing death with elegance, central to Mexico’s Día de los Muertos tradition.
Castillo\'s work is part of prestigious collections around the world, including the Royal Family of Spain and the Museum of London. Comparable newer works (2020+) from the Taller (Which means his family shop) (10\" size) have sold for $1,000–$2,000+, but this is a rare original and significantly larger.
A unique feature of this piece is the floral wrap around the central stem, not commonly seen in others. It may be a one-of-a-kind embellishment. Out of respect for the art, I have not attempted to remove it.
