Up for sale is an exceptional piece of postwar military and textile history: an authentic, first-generation late 1940s Japanese Sukajan (Souvenir) Jacket commissioned by a U.S. serviceman deployed to Okinawa, Japan during the immediate post-WWII occupation era. This fully reversible piece features striking, highly detailed embroidery on both sides and retains its incredibly rare, original late-1940s period hardware.
SIDE A (Yellow Acetate Satin):
Features a rare, beautifully rendered embroidered map of the Okinawa island chain. It highlights major Cold War-era strategic military landmarks and regional hubs, including Kadena (Base), Naha, Kuwae, Oroku, Nago, Ishikawa, and training grounds like Shuri. The map is bordered by a classic, vibrant stylized Chinese-style dragon and traditional regional floral motifs. The thread colors remain remarkably bold and clean.
SIDE B (Maroon/Burgundy Acetate Satin):
Features a fierce, large-scale depiction of an Okinawan Shisa (guardian lion dog) / Hannya spirit under the \"Okinawa\" banner, detailed with intricate white, yellow, and black thread work.
