USA 1885 2¢ \'HOOSIER AUGER TILE & BRICK MACHINE\' ILLUSTRATED ADVERTISING COVER RUSHVILLE TO GREENSBORO INDIANA

1885 (Apr. 8–11), Illustrated Heavy Machinery Advertising Franked Cover from Rushville, Indiana to Greensboro IN via Cincinnati. Buff envelope bearing a printed three-line corner card at upper left: \"Return to NOLAN, MADDEN & CO., / RUSHVILLE, IND., / If not called for within ten days.\". The face is dominated by a full-size, finely engraved pale red illustration titled across the bottom: \"The Hoosier Auger Tile and Brick Machine No. 5.\", with the artist/engraver\'s imprint below (\"CHANDLER, INDPLS.\"). Addressed in flourishing dark ink to \"J. M. Bacheldor / Greensboro / H. C. [Henry County] / Ind.\". Franked at upper right with an 1883 2¢ red-brown Washington, cancelled by an indistinct black circular cork killer and tied by a bold circular town datestamp \"RUSHVILLE / APR / 8 / IND.\" (Rush County). The reverse flap displays a sharp black circular railway transit datestamp \"CINCINNATI, O. / APR / 9 / 10 AM / 1885 / TRANSIT\", along with an uncommon black octagonal receiving postmark \"GREENSBORO / APR / 11 / 1885 / IND.\". Condition exhibits trivial edge wear, small peripheral handling marks, and minor soiling, very fine graphic impression and sharp backstamps.

A visually spectacular and highly desirable Gilded Age heavy manufacturing advertising cover promoting \"The Hoosier Auger Tile and Brick Machine No. 5,\" manufactured by Nolan, Madden & Co. in Rushville, Indiana. Operating a large foundry and machine works in Rush County, Nolan, Madden & Co. produced specialized industrial tile and brick extruders essential for manufacturing agricultural drainage tiles, which transformed the swampy soils of the Midwest into prime agricultural farmland during the late 19th century. The cover features an elaborate, expansive engraving by Indianapolis engraver H. C. Chandler detailing the heavy gear drives, hopper, and cutting table of the steam-driven machine. Dispatched on April 8, 1885, the cover moved through Cincinnati\'s transit hub before arriving in Greensboro in neighboring Henry County, where it was struck with a choice octagonal town datestamp. An exceptional Midwestern industrial advertising cover featuring prominent ag-tech machinery, clear transit markings, and classic fancy cancel appeal.
