Buddy RichTommy Dorsey and his sweet trombone playing were already popular at the end of the 1930s, but his Orchestra truly became a sensation in 1940, when \"the skinny kid from Hoboken\" — young Frank Sinatra — stepped up to the microphone and began delivering his star-making vocal performances at the Hotel Astor. That spring, the band began turning out hit records like \"I\'ll Never Smile Again\" — featuring Jo Stafford and the Pied Pipers — and the rest, as they say, is history: Sinatra would record some 80 tracks with Tommy Dorsey before leaving the band in 1942!This poster — a striking horizontal, with bold diagonal type to match the angle of Tommy\'s raised trombone — was meticulously derived from existing ads, signage, menus, and other ephemera to commemorate this historic residency. A beauty!

We particularly focus on renowned club or concert appearances that have been preserved by fan-favorite recordings — legendary shows for which little to no advertising ephemera survives (or was ever created).SecondTakeJazzArt strives to fill in these gaps with carefully researched, highly detailed facsimiles of said missing ephemera. Our poster designs combine the verifiable performance information with vintage source materials (imagery, branding, type, etc.) and original elements (derived from or inspired by contemporaneous advertisements of the same/similar events in posters, handbills, newspapers, magazines, festival programs, album covers, etc.).In general, the posters we\'ve created for SecondTakeJazzArt fall into three categories:
1) the majority are our own wholly new original designs;
