Custom 5-Factor, Fully Adjustable, Custom Momentum Breakout Study for ThinkorswimBuild the Signal Around YOUR Trading Style — For the Stocks and ETFs You Already Watch
Instead of locking you into one fixed set of conditions, this study gives you 5 major momentum confirmation categories that can be individually turned ON or OFF.
You decide which categories must be satisfied before the study plots its Big Signal Up Arrow on your chart.
5 Selectable Momentum Categories
Each category can be set to YES or NO:
- Candle Quality
- Pre-Market High (PMH) Breakout
- Previous Day High (PDH) Breakout
- Above-Average Volume
- VWAP Breakout
Set a category to YES, and that category becomes part of the required signal criteria.
Set it to NO, and that category is ignored.
This flexibility allows you to create anything from a highly selective multi-factor breakout setup to a more streamlined momentum signal based on the stock, ETF, timeframe, volatility, and trading style you prefer.
For traders who already maintain a focused watchlist, this study can act as an additional layer of confirmation by clearly signaling when the momentum conditions you selected have aligned on the chart.
Why This Study Is Different
Many indicators use a fixed formula.
This study is designed around flexibility and user control.
For example, you may choose to require:
- Candle Quality + PMH + PDH + Volume + VWAP
- Candle Quality + PMH + Volume
- Candle Quality + PDH + VWAP
- Candle Quality + Volume only
- PMH + PDH + Volume
- Or another combination of the available categories
A green signal candle is always required as a permanent bullish signal requirement, even if the optional Candle Quality category is turned OFF.
The study is designed to help highlight bullish momentum situations that meet your own pre-selected conditions.
It does NOT tell you when you should buy, sell, enter, exit, take profit, or place a stop.
It is simply a custom technical-analysis tool designed to provide visual confirmation when your selected momentum criteria are met.
Flexible Multi-Level Breakout Logic
When one or more of the following breakout levels are enabled:
- Pre-Market High
- Previous Day High
- VWAP
the study looks for price to complete a qualifying breakout of the selected key levels.
The breakout candle must show that price was at or below at least one selected level, based on either:
- The current candle opening below the level, or
- The previous candle closing at or below the level
The current signal candle must then close at or above ALL of the breakout levels you selected.
A wick temporarily trading through a level is not enough.
The candle must actually finish at or above the selected resistance level(s).
Example
If you select:
PMH = YES
PDH = YES
VWAP = YES
the signal candle must close at or above all three levels.
If only:
PDH = YES
then the study evaluates the breakout using the Previous Day High only.
This allows the indicator to adapt to different breakout structures without forcing every trader to use the exact same confirmation combination.
Important: If multiple breakout levels are set to YES, the signal candle must close at or above every selected level. If even one selected level is not cleared on the close, no signal arrow will appear.

Parameter Adjustment & TestingThis indicator is intentionally highly adjustable.
That flexibility is one of its main features, but it also means the buyer is responsible for determining which settings work best with their own trading approach.
Results can vary significantly based on:
- Time of day
- Volume behavior
- Selected confirmation categories
- ATR settings
- Candle Quality settings
- Breakout buffers
There is no single “magic setting” that will work perfectly on every stock, ETF, timeframe, or market condition.
A setting that works well for a highly volatile momentum stock may not be appropriate for a slower-moving ETF.
Backtesting & Paper Trading Strongly RecommendedBefore using any configuration with real money, you should:
- Experiment with different category combinations
- Test different ATR settings
- Test different volume settings
- Test different candle-quality requirements
- Test different chart timeframes
- Review historical chart behavior
- Paper trade the setup
- Determine whether the study fits your own trading strategy
Market conditions change.
Settings that performed well under one market environment may behave differently For...

The Signal Arrow simply means that the market conditions you selected inside the study have been satisfied.
An arrow does NOT automatically mean you should enter a trade.
You must still evaluate the chart and apply your own trading strategy, risk management, position sizing, stop-loss rules, profit targets, market context, and judgment.
Think of this as an additional technical-analysis tool for your trading toolbox.
