The Dance Begins When the Waltz Goes Backwards was part of Towne Street Theatre\'s 1995–96 season of world premieres by Los Angeles-based African-American women playwrights.The play concerns a white, aging television writer whose life intersects with that of a Black intellectual homeless philosopher. Described as an urban comedy, the production was embraced by audiences and received critical attention.Morgan\'s relationship with Towne Street Theatre began with a 1993 staged reading of her play Derivatives and continued with productions including The Dance Begins When the Waltz Goes Backwards, An American Tract, Digital Natives and Babble Rousers, as well as later staged readings and productions of her other works.Morgan began writing plays in the early 1970s after being accepted into the Writers Guild Open Door Writing Program, where she developed her voice as a playwright. She later received recognition for her screenplay They Need a Porter at the Chase Hotel.
