A very rare pink lustreware handled ale mug, c.1840, Sunderland or Staffordshire, of squat and broad proportions, notably featuring a circular middle band of handpainted motifs, alternating images of barley ears and hop leaves. I have never seen a pink lustre mug of these proportions with this decoration, which strongly suggests that this vessel was used for the consumption of ale or beer. It is much too large to be a coffee can (unless you wanted to give yourself a heart attack after drinking so much caffeine!). Marked ‘A’ to the base, handpainted. A very rare and attractive lustre piece.
Condition: very fine overall, with bright lustre and finely moulded and painted decoration. The base has a large shallow chip, of about 3cm in length. There is also a long thin hairline, extending in a shallow curve from the rim to the base of the handle.
Weight: 213g
Measurements: H. 9 cm (3.54 in.) x rim diameter 9 cm (3.54 in).
