The sale was the marquee Old Masters event of Masters Week, distinguished above all by the historic appearance of Sandro Botticelli’s Portrait of a Youth Holding a Roundel, which realized $92.2 million, making it one of the most valuable Old Master portraits ever sold and the second most expensive Old Master painting ever saleed.
Beyond the Botticelli, the sale assembled a formidable cross‑section of European painting from the Renaissance through the 19th century: rare early Italian works by Hugo van der Goes, Apollonio di Giovanni, Taddeo di Bartolo, and Sano di Pietro; strong Dutch and Flemish still lifes by Rachel Ruysch, Willem van Aelst, Ambrosius Bosschaert, and Willem Claesz. Heda; and distinguished portraiture by Aert de Gelder and Sir Anthony van Dyck.
Additional records were set for Luca della Robbia’s Relief of the Madonna and Child, which achieved $2,016,500, alongside notable results for Gerard Seghers, Frans Pourbus the Elder, the Master of Marradi, and Willem van Aelst.
Overall, the sale reaffirmed Sotheby’s dominance in the Old Masters market, drawing global offerding—particularly for the Botticelli—and anchoring Masters Week with a blend of museum‑caliber Renaissance rarities, Dutch Golden Age highlights, and 18th–19th century works by Hubert Robert, Bouguereau, and Lord Leighton
