A hand-painted studio pottery vase from a Benedictine Sister convent in Ferdinand, Indiana, signed by Sister Anysia and dated 1941. It is in pristine condition. It weighs 1 pound 2 ounces and is approximately 7.5” x 4.5”.
The sisters of the Benedictine monastery operated a well known arts and crafts program in the 1940s at the Monastery of Immaculate Conception.
The vase has a two handled, amphora form common in convent pottery. It has a matte glaze body. Notice the blue bird folk art motif reflecting European influence, often true of German influence. The gold handles and rim are frequently seen in Ferdinand ceramics of that era.
