Short \"Crusader\" 1927 British Schneider Cup Racer

The Short Crusader (also known as the Short-Bristow or Short-Bristol Crusader) was a British racing seaplane built by Short Brothers for the 1927 Schneider Trophy race.Designed by W. A. Bristow and W. G. Carter, it was a unique low-wing monoplane constructed primarily of wood with an elliptical wing layout, powered by a 960 hp Bristol Mercury radial engine to leverage the superior power-to-weight ratio of air-cooled engines.

Although it made its first flight on 4 May 1927 with promising handling characteristics, the aircraft was found to be significantly slower than its British rivals, the Supermarine S.5 and Gloster IV, during testing.Consequently, it was relegated to a practice role for the race in Venice and never competed.

The Crusader\'s operational life ended abruptly on 11 September 1927 when test pilot Harry M. Schofield crashed the aircraft during a practice takeoff.The crash was caused by crossed aileron control cables during reassembly after shipment from the UK. Schofield survived the incident with injuries, but the aircraft was destroyed, marking the end of the radical radial-engine racing experiment.
