This sale is for rare Lionel postwar archive 1655 locomotive with 1654 tender. These desirable pieces came from the Richard Kughn collection out of the 2017 Pace & Hong sale then subsequently Stout sales. This sale was famous for offering many of Dick Kughn’s personal Lionel archive pieces. The sale consisted of Lionel corporate archive items such as factory prototypes, documents, engineering records, production samples and Madison Hardware stock.
The two items in this lot are a early postwar 1655 Special Test locomotive which is in EX condition and features an original tag that reads “R2-U1-57” and the other side “#1655 (C) steam locomotive”. There are also two pieces of medical tape on the roof that read “Special test” and “1655-49”. There is a rubber stamp on the bottom that reads “August 17, 1949”.
The second item is a 1654 production sample Tender. The tender is in VG condition. Nice paint but has a dent on one side. Stampings are crisp. Metal staple end trucks with one operating g coupler. The tender has a tag that reads “R3-U1-55” and has a piece of medical tape that says “WT. 270/T13..5”. There was another piece of tape that is no longer present. The bottom of the tender is rubber stamped July 18, 1947.
Both of these unique and rare pieces of postwar Lionel history have the Lionel archive Stout sales certificates of authenticity.
